Network Redesign Project

Our objective was to reduce the number of systems in the datacenter (more than 70 servers), reduce disaster recovery times, reduce maintenance efforts and still increase the service-level.

The network infrastructure hosted about 2000 user systems with various operating systems.

Network Redesign

Consolidation of datacenter infrastructure

During our assessment, we discovered that it was possible to consolidate the majority of the systems based on their services. The accounting and CRM system had to remain independant for configuration reasons and to reduce recovery times during disaster situations.

We implemented a backup backbone that offloaded backup traffic from the production network.

The five mailservers were consolidated into a single cluster with two frontend systems and a shared storage unit.

The roughly fourty fileservers were consolidated into only two systems using Active Directory DFS, so this migration remained transparent to the user systems.

SMTP Open Relay

Our objective was to evaluate strategic and operational risks that could be derived from IT operations.

SMTP Open Relay

How an open relay can cause damage

During our assessment, we discovered that open relays on the network were posing a serious threat to the corporate image.

Web browsing traffic

Our objective was to reduce the virus intrusion points for a corporate environment. One of the requirements was to retain the existing supplier relationship with the corporate antivirus software on the desktops since a maintenance agreement had just been signed for another two years. Yet, the protection level was unsatisfactory.

Web Traffic Filter

Securing users' web browsing traffic

While retaining the corporate antivirus solution for desktops, we implemented a virusfilter for web traffic that is based on an opensource solution. The main entry point for viruses as we determined was users' web traffic, specifically to web based mailboxes that contained viruses. Additionally, the new gateway filtered SMTP, POP3 and FTP traffic for viruses and stopped "phishing" attacks to the network.
